Types of mandatory training.
While there are no federal training regulations that apply to all employers across the board, those in the public sector, construction, food service, health and others, must meet certain requirements to comply with federal, state and local regulations. For example, many construction companies must provide OSHA safety training and federal contractors must complete training on topics such as records management, continuity awareness and anti-discrimination, according to the US Department of Labor.
Some states, like California, require employers to train on sexual harassment, or require specific training for occupations or certifications. For example, Texas requires licensed childcare facilities to provide various clock hours of training, according to SHRM.
What Happens if You Don’t Provide Required Training?
Not providing required training leads to non-compliance, the result of which could end in penalties. If you don’t provide the required training and an employee is hurt on the job, you may have to pay damages or even face criminal charges. But what’s more, when you don’t provide the right training to keep your employees safe, you risk their health, productivity and work quality.
Lean on the Professionals for Guidance
Since compliance is such a sticky issue, it’s a good idea to seek legal advice about which types of training your employees require. SHRM recommends that employers assess their training obligations, with guidance from legal counsel, by asking “What training should we provide to create a fair, safe and respectful environment for all employees?”
