Things to Do Before 2017: Reflect on and Revise Goals

With the New Year right around the corner, it’s time to start talking about New Year’s resolutions and business goals for 2017. But before you put 2016 behind you, take this time to reflect on the goals you made for 2016. Did you surpass them with grace or did you not quite make quota? Whatever the case, use your 2016 goals to help prepare for 2017.

Short and long-term goals motivate and engage, while driving you towards business success no matter what level employee you are. Short-term goals act as stepping stones towards major milestones. They allow for small celebrations along the way that will motivate you towards achieving your long-term goals. Short-term goals can also serve as street signs along the way that will make sure you and your employees are on track to reach your long term goals and not get lost along the way.

Long-term goals are necessary to give your short-term goals direction and these goals can turn into major milestones when met. But no one stands up, decides to build a house, and does it. There are little goals along the way that have to be met before the house can be finished and building your organization is no different than building a house. If you didn’t achieve great success this year, look back at the short term goals you set. Maybe something was overlooked, rushed through, or just not a reasonable goal. If you were successful this year,, it was your short-term goals led you there.

When prepping your goals for 2017, remember the following: Your goals should provide direction to you and your coworkers. Your goals should motivate you and those around you, and those short-term goals should fall in step with your long-term intentions.
